From packaging materials to appearance design, how to play with coffee packaging?

The coffee business has shown strong growth momentum worldwide. It is predicted that by 2024, the global coffee market will exceed US$134.25 billion. It is worth noting that although tea has replaced coffee in some parts of the world, coffee still maintains its popularity in certain markets such as the United States. Recent data shows that up to 65% of adults choose to drink coffee every day.

The booming market is driven by many factors. First, more and more people choose to consume coffee outdoors, which undoubtedly provides impetus for market growth. Secondly, with the rapid urbanization process around the world, the consumption demand for coffee is also growing. In addition, the rapid development of e-commerce has also provided new sales channels for coffee sales.

With the trend of increasing disposable income, consumers' purchasing power has been improved, which in turn has increased their requirements for coffee quality. The demand for boutique coffee is growing, and the consumption of raw coffee is also continuing to grow. These factors have jointly promoted the prosperity of the global coffee market.

As these five types of coffee become more popular: Espresso, Cold Coffee, Cold Foam, Protein Coffee, Food Latte, the demand for coffee packaging is also increasing.

Structural Trends in Coffee Packaging

Determining the materials for packaging coffee is a complex task, which poses a challenge to roasters due to the product's requirements for freshness and the vulnerability of coffee to external environmental factors.

Among them, e-commerce ready packaging is on the rise: roasters must consider whether the packaging can withstand postal and courier delivery. In addition, in the United States, the shape of the coffee bag may also have to adapt to the size of the mailbox.

Return to paper packaging: As plastic becomes the main packaging choice, the return of paper packaging is underway. The demand for kraft paper and rice paper packaging is gradually increasing. Last year, the global kraft paper industry exceeded $17 billion due to the increase in demand for sustainable and recyclable packaging materials. Today, environmental awareness is not a trend, but a requirement.

Sustainable coffee bags, including recyclable, biodegradable and compostable, will undoubtedly have more options this year. High attention to anti-counterfeiting packaging: Consumers pay more and more attention to the origin of specialty coffee and whether their purchases are beneficial to the producer. Sustainability has become an important factor in coffee quality. To support the livelihoods of the worlds 25 million coffee farmers, the industry needs to come together to promote sustainability initiatives and promote ethical coffee production.

Eliminate expiration dates: Food waste has become a global problem, with experts estimating that it costs as much as $17 trillion per year. To reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, roasters are exploring ways to extend coffees optimal shelf life. Since coffee is more shelf-stable than other perishables and its flavor only fades over time, roasters are using roast dates and quick response codes as more effective solutions to communicate key product attributes of coffee, including when it was roasted.

This year, we observed packaging design trends with bold colors, eye-popping images, minimalist designs, and retro fonts dominating most categories. Coffee is no exception. Here are a few specific descriptions of the trends and examples of their application on coffee packaging:

1. Use bold fonts/shapes

Typography design is in the spotlight. A variety of colors, patterns, and seemingly unrelated factors that somehow work together make up this field. Dark Matter Coffee, a Chicago-based roaster, not only has a strong presence, but also a group of rabid fans. As highlighted by Bon Appetit, Dark Matter Coffee is always ahead of the curve, featuring colorful artwork. Since they believe that "coffee packaging can be boring," they specially commissioned local Chicago artists to design the packaging and released a limited edition coffee variety featuring the artwork every month.

2. Minimalism

This trend can be seen in all types of products, from perfume to dairy products, to candy and snacks, to coffee. Minimalist packaging design is a great way to better communicate with consumers in the retail industry. It stands out on the shelf and simply declares "this is quality."

3. Retro Avant-garde

A saying "Everything that used to be old is new again..." has created a "60s meets 90s", from Nirvana-inspired fonts to designs that look straight from Haight-Ashbury, the bold ideological rock spirit is back. Case in point: Square One Roasters. Their packaging is imaginative, lighthearted, and each package has a light illustration of bird ideology.

4. QR code design

QR codes can respond quickly, allowing brands to lead consumers into their world. It can show customers how to use the product in the best way, while also exploring social media channels. QR codes can introduce consumers to video content or animations in a new way, breaking the limitations of long-form information. In addition, QR codes also give coffee companies more design space on packaging, and no longer need to explain product details too much.

Not only coffee, high-quality packaging materials can help the production of packaging design, and good design can better show the brand in front of the public. The two complement each other and jointly create a broad development prospect for brands and products.
