How to identify truly sustainable food packaging?
More and more manufacturers on the market claim that they have the qualifications to produce sustainable food packaging. So how can consumers identify true recyclable/compostable packaging manufacturers? YPAK tells you!
As a special recyclable/compostable material, there are one-to-one corresponding certificates from raw materials to finished products. Only with a basis can it be truly traceable and environmentally friendly packaging. It is often easy to be deceived by our verbal promises.
So among so many types of certificates, which ones are truly effective and what we need?
First of all, we must first make it clear that recyclability and compostability require different certificates for certification. At present, GRS, ISO, BRCS, DIN, FSC,CE and FDA are internationally recognized by the public. These seven are internationally recognized environmental protection and food contact certificates. What do these certificates represent?
•1.GRC——Global Recycled Standard
GRS certification (Global Recycling Standard) is an international, voluntary, and complete product standard. The content is aimed at supply chain manufacturers for product recycling/recycled components, supervision chain control, social responsibility and environmental regulations, and the implementation of chemical restrictions, and is certified by a third-party certification body. The second is the validity period of the certificate: How long is the GRS certification certificate valid? The certificate is valid for one year.
2.ISO——ISO9000/ISO14001
ISO 9000 is a series of quality management standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It is designed to help organizations manage and control their business processes and ensure that their products and services meet customer needs and regulatory requirements. The ISO 9000 standard is a series of documents, including ISO 9000, ISO 9001, ISO 9004 and ISO 19011.
ISO 14001 is an environmental management system certification specification and environmental management system standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization. It is formulated in response to the increasingly serious global environmental pollution and ecological damage, the depletion of the ozone layer, global warming, the disappearance of biodiversity and other major environmental problems that threaten the future survival and development of mankind, in line with the development of international environmental protection, and in accordance with the needs of international economic and trade development.
•3.BRCS
The BRCGS food safety standard was first published in 1998 and provides certification opportunities for manufacturers, food suppliers and food processing plants. BRCGS food certification is internationally recognized. It provides evidence that your company meets strict food safety and quality requirements.
•4.DIN CERTCO
DIN CERTCO is a certification mark issued by the German Institute for Standardization Certification Center (DIN CERTCO) to identify products that meet specific standards and requirements.
Obtaining a DIN CERTCO certificate means that the product has passed rigorous testing and evaluation and meets the requirements of biodegradability, disintegration, etc., thus obtaining the qualification for circulation and use in all EU countries.
DIN CERTCO certificates have a very high degree of recognition and credibility. They are accepted by the European Biodegradable Materials Association (IBAW), the North American Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), the Oceania Bioplastics Association (ABA), and the Japan Bioplastics Association (JBPA), and are used in major mainstream markets around the world.
•5.FSC
FSC is a system that was born in response to the global problem of deforestation and degradation, as well as the sharp increase in demand for forests. FSC® forest certification includes "FM (Forest Management) Certification" that certifies proper forest management, and "COC (Process Control) Certification" that certifies the proper processing and distribution of forest products produced in certified forests. Certified products are marked with the FSC® logo.
•6. CE
CE certification is a passport for products to enter the EU and European Free Trade Zone markets. The CE mark is a mandatory safety mark for products under EU law. It is the abbreviation of the French "Conformite Europeenne" (European Conformity Assessment). All products that meet the basic requirements of EU directives and undergo appropriate conformity assessment procedures can be affixed with the CE mark.
•7.FDA
FDA (Food and Drug Administration) certification is a certificate of food or drug quality issued by the Food and Drug Administration of the U.S. government. Due to its scientific and rigorous nature, this certification has become a world-recognized standard. Drugs that have obtained FDA certification can not only be sold in the United States, but also in most countries and regions in the world.
