For most coffee producing countries in the northern hemisphere, the 2024/25 season will begin in October, including Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua in Central and South America; Ethiopia, Kenya, Côte d'Ivoire in East and West Africa; and Vietnam and India in Southeast Asia.
Because some of the above-mentioned countries were generally affected by El Niño weather during the early growth of the season, the forecast for the new season's production performance is mixed.
In Colombia, there has been a positive recovery, and the new season's coffee production is expected to reach 12.8 million bags. Domestic coffee consumption will also increase by 1.6% to 2.3 million bags.
In Mexico and Central America, total production is expected to reach 16.5 million bags, an increase of 6.4% compared with the previous year's ten-year low.
Small increases in Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica are expected to contribute to the recovery, but will still be 12.50% below the region's peak production in the past few years.
In Uganda, although higher prices for Robusta coffee have stimulated more exports from the country, production is expected to remain stable in the new season at around 15 million bags.
In Ethiopia, the new season's coffee production is expected to reach 7.5 million bags, but about half of the production will be consumed domestically and the remaining half will be exported.
In Vietnam, the market focus remains on weather developments in coffee-producing areas, and current prices have already digested the adverse effects of the previous El Niño weather. Although production forecasts vary before the new season, a reduction in production is generally expected.
